Canon’s New EOS R8 Shoots 24 Megapixel Photos at up to 40fps
Canon has announced its new R8 body, offering an affordable entry-level full-frame mirrorless camera in a light and compact size.
With the same 24-megapixel sensor and Dual Pixel AF, DIGIC X processor, and AI-driven subject recognition as the Canon R6 Mark II, the R8 comes in at a considerably lower cost of entry.
Weighing in at 461g with battery and SD card, this body is Canon’s lightest full-frame EOS R system to date. It comes in a compact size, with physical dimensions of 133 x 86 x 70mm. The R8 boasts a wider dynamic range, reduced digital noise, and crystal-clear detail.
Shooting at six frames per second (fps), the R8 has the capability of shooting up to 40 fps with a fully electronic shutter.
There, however, is no mechanical shutter, and the camera does lack in-body stabilisation, making it rely on image-stabilised lenses for vibration reduction.
It is capable of focus stacking and has multiple options for HDR, even with moving subjects, both for photos and video.
The body also features a fully articulated 3-inch LCD touchscreen with 1.62 million dots. The screen can be used for AF point selection, Touch AF, Touch Shutter, Magnification, and more.
The R8 comes with a new automated shooting mode that can be activated by turning the dial to A+. This new mode provides advanced shooting assistance and unlocks several creative modes.
The full-frame advantage of this body extends to the R8’s video capabilities, which include 4K UHD at frame rates up to 60p.
It can also record in C-Log 3 and capture up to 10-bit 4:2:2 H.265 HEVC. The camera offers a Vertical Movie Mode, movie self-timer, and audio noise reduction.
The Canon EOS R8 will be available from Spring 2023 at an RRP of £1,699.99/$1,499.
