New Compact Zoom Lens for Nikon Mirrorless Z Mount

Nikon has announced a new Z mount compact travel zoom lens: the DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR. It is designed specifically for Nikon mirrorless cameras with an ASP-C sensor.

The compact zoom measures in at just 3.6 inches long, weighing 315 grams, with a 62mm filter thread and a 7.9 inch minimum focusing distance. As the lens is designed for ASP-C cropped sensors, it has a 27-210mm full-frame equivalent focal range.

“Its wide focal-length range makes the lens ideal for capturing a great variety of subjects during travel as well as for shooting daily snapshots”, says Nikon.

The Nikon VR system helps the lens attain 5 stops of image stabilisation, helping users achieve sharper images with a slower shutter in low light.

“Fast, precise and quiet AF operation is attained with the employment of an STM (stepping motor)”, claims Nikon.

As with many new lenses, specialist functions can be assigned to a control ring on the barrel of the lens. This can be seen behind the main focus ring on the image below. As of yet, Nikon has not announced the exact features that will be assignable.

The DX 18-140mm f/3.5-6.3 VR is constructed of 17 elements in 13 groups. This includes two extra-low dispersion glass elements, and two other aspherical elements to minimise chromatic and comatic aberrations.

The new lens is available for pre-order from most highstreet retailers for £599 UK and $596.95 USA.
