Nikon Announces Development of 400mm f/2.8 With Inbuilt 1.4x Teleconverter

Alongside the brand new flagship Z9 camera, Nikon has also made a few lens announcements: the 24-120mm f/4 and 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6.

But in true Nikon style, they have also announced the development of a brand new product: the Z mount, 400mm f/2.8 super-telephoto prime lens, which features an inbuilt 1.4x teleconverter.

The NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S is set to be the first NIKKOR Z super-telephoto prime lens in the Nikon lineup. The lens will be a part of the Nikkor S-Line of lenses, meaning that it is set to be one of Nikon’s top line of lenses, featuring their best optical performance.

The lens will feature an inbuilt 1.4x teleconverter with a new coating that aims to deliver “the highest anti-reflection performance in Nikkor history”.

Nikon has claimed that the design is also optimised for video recording. This maximises the use cases for the new lens in conjunction with the new mirrorless cameras that are highly capable of great video performance.

Along with the development announcement, Nikon has released a roadmap of how its lens lineup will look by 2023:

Nikon has not yet given a release date for the NIKKOR Z 400mm f/2.8 TC VR S, but we expect to be able to report more in 2022.
