Weekly Photography Assignment: Backlighting
Each week we’ll be giving you a theme that you can submit a photo for, and we’ll choose our two favourites to be featured on the Nature TTL website. Participating in these assignments will be a great way for you to force yourself to push the boundaries of your photography and improve together as a community on the website.
Week 65: Backlighting
Our theme this week is Backlighting. For this assignment, try exploring backlighting. This is where the light comes from behind the subject and straight towards the camera. It allows for beautiful rim-lighting around the subject. You can also try shooting light through the back of translucent things like leaves.
Here are some tutorials to help you:
- Backlighting in Macro Photography
- Master Backlighting in Wildlife Photography
- Choose the Best Lighting for Wildlife Photos

- Include a description with your photo and tell us a bit about it!
You have until next Tuesday, 6th February, to submit your photo.
Last Week’s Favourites
Our favourite images from last week’s theme, Close-up Photos. You can see all of the entries here.
Lovely colours and a soft focus framing the veins in this autumn leaf are making me long for the oranges and browns of autumn once again, instead of all the rain and wind I’m having in the UK at the moment. The soft bokeh in the background contains colour tones that compliment the subject nicely. Perhaps a polariser filter would work nicely to remove that little bit of glare on the leaf – a trick that often gets overlooked. Thanks John!
