Weekly Photography Assignment: Mood and Atmosphere

Each week we’ll be giving you a theme that you can submit a photo for, and we’ll choose our favourite to be featured on the Nature TTL website. Participating in these assignments will be a great way for you to encourage yourself to push the boundaries of your photography and improve together as a community on the website.

Week 215: Mood and Atmosphere

Our theme this week is Mood and Atmosphere, and we’d love to see what creative images you can take of nature, highlighting its darkest and most dramatic moments. Will you head out on a foggy morning to try to capture a dark and dramatic landscape? Or look for wildlife hunkered down in the rain? Search for compositions and scenes that are evocative of a dark, atmospheric feeling. You might also try to use editing, like turning a colour photo black and white, to add drama to your shots! Whether you’re a seasoned nature photographer, or are new to the genre, the options for adding mood and atmosphere to your nature photos are endless, and we can’t wait to see what inspiring images you can create.

Last week’s winner

Last week’s theme was Garden Birds – and our favourite image this week is:

This week’s winner is this image, captured by B B: “Sugar water feeders have kept Anna’s hummingbirds in the area yearlong. These amazing hummers survive the winters here. This little guy perched on a tree right outside my balcony.” We love the beahviour captured in this image, and the elements of comedy and creativity involved! Instead of being a ‘standard’ portrait of a species, this shot has captured a real sense of character, and the indiviualism of the bird being photographed. The fading colours in the background of the shot perfectly echo the subject, and the central framing is direct and highly engaging. So many fantastic entries this week – well done, and thank you to all who entered!
