Week 300: Backyard Birds

Our theme this week is Backyard Birds, and in honour of the Bird Photographer of the Year winners being announced recently, we’d love to see what fantastic bird photos you can take. Birds are a great photographic subject; they are readily available in most places in the world – even in urban environments, and they are a highly charismatic and engaging subject matter. We’d like you to focus on ‘birds in your backyard,’ whether that be in your garden, local park, or local town or city. Perhaps you will focus on fascinating bird details, such as the patterns of feathers. Maybe you will photograph birds in flight, or interesting bird behaviour. Whether you’re a seasoned nature photographer, or are new to the genre, the options for awesome backyard bird images are endless, and we can’t wait to see what inspiring images you can create.

Last week’s winner

Last week’s theme was Signs of Autumn– and our favourite image this week is:

This week’s winner is this image, captured by Isaac Wing: ‘A devils club leaf runs out of life. Shrouded in shade the chlorophyll begin to break down leaving this hanging leaf mercy to the next fall storm when it will be carried from its thorny stem to the ground to be returned to the forest.’

This image captures all of the mood and drama of the arrival of autumn. The composition is highly engaging, with an unusual perspective that provides fascinating insight into a common subject, with an immersive caption to further tell the story of the scene. Well done, and thank you to all who entered!
